Blood Test Guide: Supplement Smarter, Not More

Getting your supplement regimen right can be tricky. Explore how blood testing with Aware could help you find your ideal balance.

Your pee has probably turned bright yellow after a multivitamin. It's not harmful. It's just excess vitamin B2 leaving your body because you took more than you needed. Harmless for your health, less so for your wallet.

That small moment tells a bigger story about personalized nutrition: most of us are guessing. We buy supplements based on articles, social media posts, or what a friend swears by. But nutrient needs vary enormously from person to person. Genetics, diet, age, sex, activity level, gut health — all of it shapes what you're actually absorbing and what you're short of.

A blood test changes that equation entirely. Instead of guessing, you get data.

What does your blood actually show?

A comprehensive blood test measures your circulating levels of key vitamins, minerals, and nutrients, the ones your body relies on daily for energy production, immune defence, bone integrity, and hormonal balance.

The results give you a baseline. You can see, in concrete numbers, whether you're deficient, optimal, or above range in the markers that matter. That context is what makes a supplement decision meaningful rather than speculative.

Common nutrient biomarkers measured in a blood test include:

  • Vitamin D (25-OH): regulates calcium absorption, immune function, and mood signalling. Low levels are common, particularly through autumn and winter.
  • Vitamin B12: essential for nerve function, red blood cell formation, and DNA synthesis. Deficiency is more common in people following plant-based diets.
  • Ferritin and transferrin saturation: the markers that reveal your true iron storage status, not just whether you're anaemic.
  • Vitamin B9 (folate): critical for cell division and particularly important during reproductive years.
  • Zinc: supports immune function, skin integrity, and wound healing.
  • Magnesium: involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including muscle contraction and blood sugar regulation.
  • Omega-3 index: reflects your long-chain fatty acid status, relevant for cardiovascular and cognitive health.

Without knowing where your levels actually sit, you're essentially supplementing blind.

Why guessing costs more than you think

According to the BfR Verbrauchermonitor 2021 SPEZIAL: Vitamine als Nahrungsergänzungsmittel, 57% of people in Germany take vitamin supplements. Yet only a minority have a confirmed deficiency.

That gap matters for two reasons. First, unnecessary supplementation is a real cost. Premium supplements aren't cheap, and buying them without a clear rationale compounds year on year. Second, more is not always better.

Fat-soluble vitamins like A and D are not flushed out the way water-soluble ones are. Excess vitamin D over time can raise urinary calcium excretion, which may increase the risk of kidney stone formation in predisposed individuals. PubMed Central (Tack et al., Nutrients 2018) High-dose vitamin A can accumulate to levels that cause acute and chronic toxicity, with effects ranging from bone pain and liver dysfunction to serious harm during pregnancy. NCBI (StatPearls: Vitamin A Toxicity, NCBI) And some herbal supplements, including St. John's Wort, interact with prescription medications in ways that matter clinically.

A blood test before you start a supplement protocol doesn't just help you choose the right things. It also helps you avoid the wrong ones.

Please consult a qualified healthcare professional before starting any supplement regimen.

How Aware helps you find your baseline

Aware's Nutrition Package measures the key vitamin and mineral biomarkers that tell you whether your body is getting enough of what it needs. You book a same-day appointment at one of our Berlin testing locations, give a blood sample, and receive your results in the Aware app, with reference ranges and plain-language guidance included.

For a broader picture of your metabolic and organ health alongside your nutrient status, the Holistic Advanced Package covers 99 biomarkers, a comprehensive view of how your body is functioning as a whole.

If you find a deficiency, your Aware results give you a documented baseline to work from. If you retest after three to six months of targeted supplementation, you can see whether your levels have responded.

What to do with your results

Getting your results is step one. Here's how to move from data to action:

If you're deficient: Speak to your doctor or a registered dietitian about an appropriate supplement form and dose for your specific result. Don't rely on the front-of-pack dosing alone. Therapeutic repletion often requires a different approach than maintenance.

If you're optimal: You likely don't need to supplement that nutrient. Redirect that spend and focus on the markers that do show room for improvement.

If you're above range: This is particularly relevant for fat-soluble vitamins. Excess is worth taking seriously. Discuss with a healthcare professional whether to pause or reduce supplementation.

Retest to confirm progress. Biomarker levels take time to shift. A follow-up blood test at three to six months gives you meaningful signal on whether what you're doing is working.

Can a blood test tell me exactly which supplements to take?

A blood test tells you your current nutrient levels, which is the most important input for a supplement decision. It doesn't replace a consultation with a doctor or dietitian, who can factor in your medical history, medications, and goals. But it gives you the objective data that makes that conversation far more productive.

Which vitamins are most commonly deficient in Germany?

Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common, particularly from October through March when UV exposure is insufficient for skin synthesis. Data from the Robert Koch Institute's DEGS1 national health survey found that 30.2% of German adults had deficient vitamin D status overall, rising to 52% during winter months. PubMed Central(Rabenberg et al., BMC Public Health 2015) Iron deficiency, measured via ferritin, is also frequently identified, especially in women of reproductive age and people following plant-based diets. B12 deficiency is another common finding in people eating vegan diets.

How often should I test my nutrient levels?

If you're actively supplementing to address a deficiency, retesting at three to six months lets you assess whether your levels have moved. For general monitoring without a known deficiency, once or twice a year is typically sufficient. Aware memberships are structured around regular testing cycles precisely for this reason.

Is it safe to take multiple supplements at once?

Some combinations are well-tolerated. Others compete for absorption. Calcium and iron taken together, for example, reduce the uptake of both. And some supplements interact with prescription medications. A blood test and a conversation with your doctor or pharmacist before starting is the most reliable way to avoid those interactions.

What's the difference between the Nutrition Package and the Holistic Advanced Package?

The Nutrition Package focuses on key vitamin and mineral biomarkers: iron status, B vitamins, and others directly relevant to your nutrient intake. The Holistic Advanced Package covers 99 biomarkers including metabolic markers, cardiovascular risk, organ function, and hormones, a fuller picture of your overall health with nutrient status included.
